Bill Message
For customers whose telephone service is part of a Hargray bundle, the County mandated E911 and the federal American with Disabilities Act required Telecommunications Relay surcharges will be line items on your bill, effective July 1. Explanations of these charges appear on page 2 of your bill. Each County sets their E911 surcharge rate which is used to provide ongoing maintenance of the emergency system. The current rates are: Beaufort County - $0.60, Jasper County - $1.00, Chatham County - $1.50. Each state sets its Telecommunications Relay surcharge which is $0.15 in South Carolina and the Georgia rate is $0.05.
Be Sure Your Wireless Phone is E-911/GPS Capable
- How can I make sure my phone is E-911-capable?
Call our customer service line, or stop by any Hargray retail store so your phone can be checked. - What is a GPS-capable phone, and why is it so important for E911?
Hargray Phase II E911 location technology is built into the phone's handset; GPS-capable phones rely on signals from the Global Positioning System satellites to help estimate their location when you make a 911 call. Hargray has selected GPS handset-based location technology to provide the most accurate capability. - Will Hargray allow activation of a phone that is not GPS-compatible?
No, because the FCC requires that carriers convert nearly all of their handsets to GPS capability, Hargray will no longer allow non GPS-capable phones to be activated onto the network. If a non-GPS capable phone that is currently active is disconnected for any reason, it will not be reactivated.
If you currently have a non GPS-capable device, you can continue to use it. However, once the device has been de-activated it will not be allowed back onto the Hargray network. - What if I don't have a GPS-capable handset? Will it be turned off?
No, Hargray will not be turning off handsets that are not GPS-capable. However, because the FCC requires that carriers convert nearly all of their handsets to GPS capability, Hargray will not allow a handset to be activated on the network unless it has GPS capability.
