Hargray Communications Group has become the preferred communications provider for Sun City Hilton Head, the company announced Tuesday.

Hargray will market and demonstrate its telephone, high-speed Internet and cable television services in Sun City's sales center, sales offices and model homes.

"Hargray hopes to have the first opportunity for all of the new residents of Sun City," said Tom Gardo, Hargray spokesman. "Roughly 3,000 new homes are to be built (in Sun City), and the first package they will look at for these services is Hargray."

Sun City's main demographic, retirees above the age of 55, are frequent users of premium, bundled telecommunications services, Gardo said.

"They want the best creature comforts for their retirement homes," he said.

Pulte Homes, which owns Sun City developer Del Webb, confirmed the relationship, but wouldn't comment further on it.

The agreement could have an impact on Davidson Cable, whose cable, high-speed Internet and telephone-over-the-Internet services extend only to Sun City residents.

William Harvey, general manager of Davidson, offered no comment on the new agreement.

Harvey did say his company still has the bulk of Sun City television customers and offers services comparable to what other competitors will offer in the neighborhood.
